It’s a matter of national security.

Democracy is under pressure around the world—and here at home. As renowned scholar Valerie Hudson has shown, the strength of a nation’s democracy and stability is directly tied to the status and security of its women. (2024 WPS Symposium, U.S. Naval War College)

At Defending Democracy we believe our military must reflect the very values it defends—and that every woman in uniform must be supported, respected, and given the tools to lead. Their inclusion is not symbolic; it is strategic.

We cannot afford to sideline half our talent when the threats to democracy grow bolder every day.

Why This Documentary Film Series? Why Now?

Modern warfare isn’t just about brute force. Today’s battlefield requires adaptability, intelligence, and strategic decision-making. Strength in today’s military comes from a wide range of skills, backgrounds, and approaches to leadership.

Women in uniform bring exactly that—often under pressure, often under-recognized—but always earned.

They are leaders, warriors, peacebuilders, and change-makers. Yet they still face barriers to full inclusion, recognition, and advancement. This isn’t just a matter of fairness—it’s a matter of national security.

That’s why we’re producing a powerful new documentary film series: Sisters in Arms.

This series will give voice to the women who serve—highlighting their professionalism, capabilities, and leadership gained not through favoritism, but through grit, excellence, and meritocracy.

Sisters in Arms will show the public what military insiders already know:

Leadership, capability, and readiness are not defined by gender, but by excellence.

Your support will help us:

  • Tell untold stories of women who have risen through the ranks by earning their place
  • Showcase the strength, discipline, and strategic leadership of women in uniform
  • Challenge outdated narratives and inspire the next generation of leaders
  • Create a cultural shift in how we view service, sacrifice, and national security

This isn’t just a film—it’s a movement. A tool for awareness, education, and change.

Their stories matter. Our security depends on it.

Why It Matters

Authoritarian regimes suppress women—because they understand: Where women rise, freedom follows.

Democracy listens. Democracy elevates.
When we show the strength and professionalism of women in the military, we shift the narrative, challenge outdated norms, and build a defense of democracy that is inclusive and unshakable.

Let’s make sure our military is as strong, principled, and forward-looking as the democracy it protects.
