Defending Democracy explores the powerful, historic, and often unsung stories of women who volunteer to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Through paintings, podcasts, film and outreach, Defending Democracy reaches military, VA, government and civilian sectors to bridge the civilian-military gap.
Our democracy has never been more fragile. For over 200 years these women have volunteered to put their lives on the line to protect our Constitution and freedom. It is time they are recognized for their accomplishments and their service. By example they inspire us, as civilians, to do our part. This project is my way.
In the summer of 2019, in COVID isolation, like everyone else, I witnessed the escalation of social and political strife across the United States. For the first time in my life, I feared for our democracy. I wondered if, through my art, I could soften the antipathy, build bridges between communities and remind my fellow citizens that freedom and democracy rise from commitment and sacrifice.
My mission is to create a series of portrait paintings, documentaries, and podcasts with the intent of reminding the viewer that freedom and democracy rise from individual commitment and sacrifice.
Why paint female service members? What better example of sacrifice than the women who are willing to give their lives to protect us, our democratic values, our freedom, our country, and our Constitution? In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being.” This project is about awakening the personal responsibility that comes with freedom.
